We Know.

We know what kinds of thoughts are healthy and lead to better outcomes.

So then it comes down to being aware of what thought-road we are going down. Is it a skillful path? Or will it lead to a downward spiral?

Drop attachment to wallowing. It won’t bring others in to help you. Maybe temporarily your friends will try to help, but when they see you won’t help yourself, they will throw up their arms.

No one else is in control of your mind. It is only you, with your good and bad habits.

Yes, habits can be hard to rewrite sometimes. But you wrote them in! You can erase and replace at will. It takes your decision and your will.

No matter how much outside encouragement you seek, it will come down to your own firm decision. Will you think and act in accordance to what is beneficial?

Yes, you can look for useful techniques to apply: a 12-step program, Cognitively-Based Compassion Training, go to a therapist, etc. But don’t use them as distractions from actually doing the work! What is the work? Noticing each thought: is this a skillful thought? And then non-judgmentally letting it go if it is not skillful.
